The Etheridge Foundation is thrilled to announce the recipient of our first ever research grant, furthering our mission to support new scientific research into the causes and effects of opioid addiction.
We have awarded $50,000 to The International Center for Ethnobotanical Education, Research, and Service (ICEERS) to help fund the completion of their study on Ibogaine for Treatment of Opioid Dependence.
"We’re overjoyed and grateful to be making this grant in support of a life-changing treatment,” said Founder Melissa Etheridge. “This is truly groundbreaking research. A personal thank you to all of our supporters who are helping us to change the system.”
There has been decades of extensive anecdotal evidence that ibogaine is capable of blocking or seriously reducing opioid dependency and alleviating cravings for up to several months.
However, ICEERS' study is the first clinical trial of its kind – breaking ground toward making this treatment legally available and accessible.
Learn more about ibogaine on our blog and ICEERS’ website.
ICEERS Executive Director Benjamin de Loenen remarked, “Our team is excited to hear that the Etheridge Foundation is partnering with us to help pave the path for ibogaine to — finally after decades — become more broadly accepted and integrated in the addiction treatment toolbox.”
ICEERS is a non-profit organization dedicated to transforming society’s relationship with psychoactive plants. The vision they’re working for is a future where plant medicine practices are integrated and valued parts of society: where every individual and each community is granted the right to pursue healing and self-empowerment, where indigenous cultures are respected, and where bridges are built between traditional knowledge and science.
“We are so touched and honored to be one of the first grantees for the Etheridge Foundation,” shared ICEERS Director of Engagement Andrea Langlois.
The Etheridge Foundation selected ICEERS’ study for its groundbreaking nature and quality design, which is perfectly aligned with our mission. However, we also appreciate this exceptional organization for leading with a deep commitment to human- and Earth-centered values, including:
Environmental sustainability
Honoring cultural diversity
Respect for indigenous and spiritual traditions
Human rights approach
Transparency and integrity
Evidence-based decision making
Reducing risks and harms, and maximizing benefits
Respectful, engaged, and collaborative relationships
ICEERS is still raising funds to fulfill the remaining costs for the study. If you feel moved to donate directly, you can do so at: https://www.iceers.org/donation/.
(On the “Amount” tab select “Worldwide”, then on the “Details” tab use the dropdown menu under “I'd like my donation to support” to select “Ibogaine clinical research”.)
We look forward to updating our supporters on the results of this incredibly important study once it is concluded!
